I am a health consicous kind of girl. I work out daily, I TRY to eat healthy, and I think I’m pretty fit. However, recently I have been hearing a lot about gluten-free diets (never the benefits of this) and I am just curious – exactly what is gluten and why can it be bad for you?

    Gluten is the protein in wheat (and certain other grains) that gives yeasted bread it’s structure.

    Some people are sensitive to gluten, and other people have celiac disease, which causes intestinal damage.

    Gluten is a protein in wheat, rye and barley. (not in oats but ppl on the Gluten Free (GF) diet avoid oats due to cross contamination with wheat in harvest.) The only ppl who need to eat gluten free are those with Celiac Disease, gluten intolerance, allergies or children with autism (not required but many parents swear the gluten free/casein free diet works for their children.) Celiac Disease is the most common reason for the gluten free diet, 1 in 133 ppl have it and many are still undiagnosed. Those with Celiac cannot digest gluten and it leads to a whole list of health problems.
    So unless you fit one of the above categories, gluten is perfectly fine and a healthy part of a good diet.

    Gluten is the part of wheat that makes bread hold together, so you get nice springy bread that doesn’t fall apart.

    It’s bad for people who have an intolerance, like celiacs, and can cause cancer and other nasties in those people.
